What if “home” isn’t a place you return to, but something you carry with you…something that grows every time you open yourself to the world?
In this episode of Embracing All of Me, digital nomad, queer entrepreneur, and bi+ ally Ken Krell unpacks a life shaped by reinvention, serendipity, and a very intentional refusal to live small.
For over 40 years, Ken has built businesses from hotel rooms, beach cafés, and countries whose languages he barely speaks. But the freedom he radiates didn’t come from perfect confidence—it came from learning to trust that he’d figure it out along the way.
Ken speaks openly about losing millions during the 2008 crash, having a heart attack from the stress, and boarding a plane to Thailand because he needed to reboot his entire life.
What he found there wasn’t just affordability or adventure—it was a quieter truth: When you have nothing left to lose, you’re free to pay attention to what makes you come alive.
And what makes Ken come alive is connection.
Not the curated, manicured kind—but the kind that happens in immigration lines, on trains, in unexpected acts of kindness from strangers who become temporary family. He reminds us that most loneliness isn’t about being alone per say; it’s about feeling unseen. Travel, when done with openness and gratitude, offers the opposite: the chance to be seen anew.
Ken also speaks to a deeper tension familiar to many queer and bi+ folks: the responsibility of “reading the room.” Of knowing when a place welcomes you and when it only tolerates you. Of understanding that visibility is both power and risk, and that moving through the world with pride sometimes means moving with strategy.
Still, Ken insists that home is available to all of us, even those who feel fragmented or rootless.
“Your nearest stranger can make you feel completely at home,” he says, “if you let them.”
It’s not about geography.
It’s about permission. Your own permission.
Whether he’s building Pride Nomad, uplifting LGBTQ travelers, or creating AI companions to combat loneliness, Ken’s life asks a simple, radical question:
What becomes possible when you stop waiting to be worthy of the world, and let the world meet you where you are?
